Wanna Succeed With Internet Marketing? Be a Baby

Post image for Wanna Succeed With Internet Marketing? Be a Baby

When you’re new to all this internet marketing mumbo-jumbo, the internet becomes this massive confusing place full of terms you don’t understand yet, people giving conflicting advice, and tons of choices. It is SO easy to become paralyzed and full of fear with an inability to take any action at all. Been there/done that. So how do we handle it? How do we push through? Here’s an idea – be a baby!

My granddaughter turned 2 on Wednesday. She is amazing. Whatever she does, she is wide-open doing it. She doesn’t walk to where she wants to go – she RUNS.

And guess what? She falls down… a LOT.

She could care less either. When she falls, she just gets up and gets right back to running.

No fear at all.

This past weekend we were at a relatives house. I was sitting on the couch and my granddaughter was standing in front of me. At the same time she and I both noticed that one of the older kids left the door to the basement stairs open.

My granddaughter and I made eye contact. It was like one of those slow motion things you see in a movie where we both look at each other KNOWING what she is about to do….and me knowing I may not be able to catch her (she’s really that fast! Or, I’m that slow….lol).

And then sure enough, BAM, she’s off like a light running towards those stairs.

No fear of falling on the way there. No fear of the stairs either. Just wide-open to get there because she WANTS to get there.

It was a beautiful run too. Like a football player bobbing and weaving his way to the end zone, she was around people’s legs and over toys headed with pure determination towards her goal.

Thankfully I tackled her just in time! (no, I did not literally tackle the baby, ok? But I did, somehow, manage to stop her)

We had many incidents like that one over the weekend, cause I’m telling you – that baby is FAST and FEARLESS.

Exactly how we all need to be in order to be successful in this business.

You’re gonna be afraid when you first start out. Fear of the unknown, fear of doing something wrong, fear of breaking something, fear of picking the wrong niche…and for some of us, even fear of success.

But like that baby when she was learning to walk, just do it – and keep doing it. You will fall down – a LOT. Don’t spend days or weeks analyzing HOW to do it – just push up on those legs and move forward.

You will learn so much more by DOING than by reading or analyzing or anything else you could be doing.

Do A LOT and do it FAST and FEARLESS.

You’re not gonna do it wrong – it’s all part of getting your balance.

If you need something to lean on for balance while you’re learning… or want to learn to run… get involved in a community that can support you AND provide the tools you need for your business.

I chose Wealthy Affiliate for my “balance” 3 and half years ago – and I’m still there. That community has helped me every step of the way up until this moment and every step I will take from this moment on.

WA suits me, it’s comfortable for me – like my home. It’s also private and a safe environment to learn and excel in. I am surrounded by folks who are all levels of this business – from their first day to their 10th year. I help people get started…and there’s folks in there that will tackle me when *I* go running for the stairs.

It’s home. It’s family. This internet marketing business can be pretty lonely, but WA helps with that SO much so we don’t feel so alone learning all this.

I wish you would join me in Wealthy Affiliate so it can be your home too.

From now through Monday November 28th, you can become a full-blown member of Wealthy Affiliate for a whole MONTH for only $1.

There is no fear in making a $1 decision. This is an opportunity you grab and run with without any hesitation.

Join me in Wealthy Affiliate for $1 here.

I’m doing the best I can to be right there inside the front door in the live chat area all weekend long so I can be there to welcome you to the family.

Need more info and details? Read this blog post.

Have a great weekend!

Great post, and good analogy. Wealthy affiliate for a $1.00 new entrepreneurs should jump all over this.

Good post sounds like your granddaughter is really going to keep you on your toes terrible two’s lol.

PotPieGirl November 26, 2011 at 5:22 am

She totally keeps us all on our toes!

Mic November 26, 2011 at 4:40 am

Through my two and a half + year’s experience, I found taking to be the most important thing to succeed.

Before I started taking action, I procrastinated lot and got into analysis paralysis too many times. I also used to think I know everything. It’s only when I started taking action that I saw I knew almost nothing. You can learn a lot through reading but you get the real knowledge and experience only when you take action.

BTW, I joined WA yesterday and I’m liking it.

PotPieGirl November 26, 2011 at 5:23 am

Great, Mic – welcome to WA!

Yes, taking action is the “thing” we all need to do in order to get anywhere or truly learn anything. Good for you that you are off and running!

Sabina November 27, 2011 at 2:01 am

Hi Jennifer,
and @ Mic – Wow I could have written this. The truth is, I have been getting your e-mails and various other things for about 18 months now and during all this time, I have done nothing but procrastinate. Well there are some major changes happening in my life and I have decided to stop being a spectator and finally take action. I have just joined WA through your link. See you on the inside! Very much enjoying all your posts btw.

Mic November 27, 2011 at 4:45 pm

@Sabina, Who are you referring to? Me or Jennifer? I’m a bit confused because you said @Mic

Sabina November 29, 2011 at 1:08 am

Hi Mic sorry for the confusion, my reply was to Jennifer but I can relate to what you were saying as I have spent a lot of time reading and learning about things without actually taking action. I’m glad to say that this is going to change! Looking forward to meeting you all.

Nadine November 26, 2011 at 5:08 am

This is great analogy for everything in life, not just internet marketing. Funny how the more we know (the older we get) the more afraid we are. We should be doing everything at full tilt, we’d probably be a lot more happy & successful with every aspect of our lives.

That said, this post is particularly pertinent to me. Thanks saying the right words at the right time.

PotPieGirl November 26, 2011 at 5:24 am

Oh, Nadine – you’re so right! We should go at everything full throttle and leave fear in the dust.

Sabina November 27, 2011 at 2:03 am

Totally agree – the older we get, the less time is left to do it all!

I’ve been bumping into this Wealthy Affiliate course lately. Probably because I’ve been looking for some hand to hold on to as I venture into the IM world. I’ve been doing on and off online stuff for a couple of years but I’ve never really gotten so deep into it. This time, I want to do it for real, though I still have that ‘fear of the unknown’. Should I take the baby way and just do it without fear?

I’ve already purchased an autoresponder account because I believe it’s one of the prerequisites for IM success. I know I have to have a give-away and so far I’ve yet to succeed in getting or creating one.

PotPieGirl November 26, 2011 at 5:24 am

Take off and run, James! You’re gonna do great =)

Glenn November 26, 2011 at 5:50 am

Hi Jennifer,

What a super analagy :)

We can all take a lot out of the resilience that kids have, knock after knock and bump after bump they keep going, somehow unfortunately as we mature we get conditioned to accept the word NO and not to fight back – that’s the real shame!

I can always recall when I trained sales teams in the uk, we would talk about what they should do when they get rejected or how they should feel if they missed a sale, I’d always tell them that when that happened it was GOOD NEWS because they are now one step nearer their next order or sale.

If you can adopt this attutide then you won’t be far away from achieving your goals. Always believe thst if some one else can do it then so can I!

PotPieGirl November 26, 2011 at 6:34 am

Well said, Glenn! Thank you for sharing!

Helenee November 26, 2011 at 7:25 am

You, lucky one! Spend more time with your grand-daughter – she’ll only be this young and cute once! :)
I remember when my daughter was two; now I sometimes catch myself trying to discern her childhood features behind the pretty teenage face I see.

Mk Akan November 26, 2011 at 9:24 am

i love this…and you are exactly right.
when we start out we may be scared of making mistakes ,of wasting time, money etc. But this is exactly what we have to do to succeed. One has to keep moving , pushing, learning, failing in order to really succeed in this online thing.

Thanks for the reminder…
(children are the most determined people in the world. They always do what they have to do ,to get what they want ….FEARLESSLY =) )

Easiest Way To Make Money Online November 26, 2011 at 2:26 pm

I’ve learned a lot from WA and have referred quite a few marketers who have become very successful. The $1 for the first month is a no brainer, even for babies.

Steve@Affiliate Marketing Tips November 26, 2011 at 2:51 pm

What a great analogy and what a great offer. Wealthy affiliate for only one dollar! What a bargain. How can anybody refuse that.

Meg Jones November 26, 2011 at 5:49 pm

This really seems like a great deal, no reason to pass it up. I think the time crunch really puts people off, but that’s the rub. Nothing will change if time is not invested.

Jon November 26, 2011 at 5:56 pm

Excellent analogy. A child learning to walk, talk. ride a bike or any other skill must inevitably make mistakes (have spills) along the way to perfecting those skills. How often does any child not try to learn those skills? Unless they have a physical/mental handicap that makes learning difficult or impossible I doubt that any child considers “not trying” an option. Likewise as adults learning new skills online we need to adopt the same approach.

“”The baby rises to its feet, takes a step, is overcome with triumph and joy–and falls flat on its face. It is a pattern for all that is to come! But learn from the bewildered baby. Lurch to your feet again. You’ll make the sofa in the end.–Pam Brown”"

“”Accept failure as a normal part of living. View it as part of the process of exploring your world; make a note of its lessons and move on.–Tom Greening and Dick Hobson”"

Hi Jennifer,
Love your constant flow of info, and it’s relevant, not just a bunch of worthless you know what… but quality!!! Look forward to you emails.
Unfortunately, I signed up for WA with Kyle’s email to me… sorry!
Thanks for being “PotPieGirl.”

Mister_Papagiorgio November 26, 2011 at 7:16 pm

Hmm, I think the story would have been better if the kid had gone down the stairs head first and learned that you have to take your lumps and that being blindly ambitious can put a hurtin’ on ya.

Ron Passfield November 26, 2011 at 10:22 pm

Jennifer, with two young grandchildren (and five children) I can relate very well to your analogy. As we get older, we tend to become accustomed to staying in our comfort zone. What excites me about Internet marketing is that you can learn every hour of every day. You can pursue a childlike curiosity and stretch your boundaries. It seems to me, the more knowledge you acquire, the more you realize what you don’t know and identify new avenues for exploration. Wealthy Affiliate is a highly respected program. I found that a similar program I joined when I started out helped me gain focus, build confidence and develop my personal brand on the Internet. Above all else, it supported me to take action, ignore the cuts and scratches on the way and to get up, brush myself down and continue my exploration. I envy young children’s persistence!

Shalisha November 27, 2011 at 3:18 am

Hi Jennifer. I picked up OWM and Conversation with Nick again. I had started worked on lenses when I first purchased it, but then wasnt seeing traffic from it., so I thought I didn’t work anymore. I just picked it up again tonight and somehow I believe OWM is going to work for me.

However, some things have outdated since you wrote the book. For instance, 3 step ads no longer exists. My question to you is has OWM been updated to reflect the changes on google? If so, do we have to pay for an upgraded copy?

Scott November 28, 2011 at 4:52 am

I think your questions are valid. OWM really helped me earn my first sale online. I also agree that some of the tools and techniques seem a bit dated. Jen, has OWM been updated at all since it’s original release??? Thanks for all of the great info on your blog.

Charley November 27, 2011 at 1:54 pm

One thing I love about Wealthy Affiliate is that they always tell you to take action on what you learn. It’s much like saying experience is the best teacher. I’ll always take action on everything I learn. BTW, I signed up to WA once again, just yesterday.

Peter Lawlor November 27, 2011 at 8:41 pm

This is a good post. I work with a colleague in a business where I was/am fairly junior. He is one of the best at his craft in the industry. I’m lucky to work with him. He told me, and it’s probably the best bit of advice I ever received from him or anyone (and he’s helped me out tremendously), and it’s “never be scared.”

Fear kills creativity, focus, motivation, results, action … pretty much everything that generates results. What I love about internet marketing is mistakes don’t matter too much, except maybe having a site de-indexed or violating the FCC. However, aside from that it’s my view to just plow ahead full steam and see what sticks. Once I see what sticks, I keep doing that. Plenty of stuff I’ve done and do failed miserably. BUT a few things worked out very nicely and that’s all I needed.

I like what Peter Lynch said about investing. He said you only need to be right 3 times in your life. If you pick 3 winners you can earn enough money to never worry about money again. It’s simplistic, but that’s what worked for him. It’s the same with internet marketing – if you have 3 things that work (heck, 1 will do it), you have a recipe for a full scale business.

Great motivational post!
Sometimes you just need a post like this to get you going on a monday morning.

Rose November 28, 2011 at 12:29 pm

When you don’t know what you are doing, you try everything and often get a lot of things right. It’s only when you read too much (and don’t experiment enough yourself), that you get into bad habits, thanks to ingesting too many outdated myths.

Jennifer November 28, 2011 at 1:15 pm

Right on! Just what I needed to hear this morning. I have been in “high-gear learning mode” for close to two years now and experimented along the way with my first site. Wow, I have learned so much since then. I’m also ready to admit that the first site I built may not have been the fabulous idea I thought it was at first. But your post here inspires me to take that experience and build on it with a new site, incorporating all the other things I learned along the way.
Thanks PotPieGirl. You have been a good source of solid info for me.

Kompiuteriu taisymas Kaune November 28, 2011 at 2:07 pm

Well said! Good analogy!
One of the very best things about Internet Marketing is that any person can get involved in it and find success. It is of no importance how old or young you are. Where you live and your ethnicity do not actually matter. Your sex isn’t important. How you look, where you stand politically–and so on., you get the idea. In online marketing what matters most is that you want to succeed and that you’re willing to work hard to get there.

Lauren November 29, 2011 at 1:50 am

Well, I bit the bullet. I joined WA with their trial offer. I’m frustrated though; live chat doesn’t appear to be working (or it’s timing out; I did see a post saying that access has been intermittent)…the keyword tool isn’t fully functional (how the heck do you search by “exact”?…

I just want to get started and on day 1 have already hit a standstill. Hoping tomorrow will be better!! I did post in the forums asking what sort of competition/key metrics we are looking for if using Google’s keyword tool so I hope one of the guys answers soon.

Penny Go November 30, 2011 at 5:40 am

Hi Jennifer, glad you’re having fun with your grandchild! Just curious, which do you like better, Wealth Affiliate or The Keyword Academy? I first found you through your 6 step Niche Sites and thought you were following Court…

Runy November 30, 2011 at 6:09 pm

Nice analogy! Its very true one must be Fast and Fearless in order to succeed and go far in life. Its amazing how one can learn and realize so much through observing a toddler. : )

Julie @ Inspired to Write November 30, 2011 at 8:40 pm

This is so true – I wish we could keep that fearlessness we have as a child. To just go full force after something we want. But we have much more to lose as an adult and I think that is what makes us hesitate, along with all the failures we have had in life. It would be great if we could hang on to even a sliver of that child wonder and lack of fear! It’s great that you have found something to focus on! IM can be a world of shiny objects and distracting paths.

Tomas (I Am Sad Because of You) December 3, 2011 at 10:20 pm

You are an amazing writter and this is your gift; I am telling you this because I signed up with WA one month ago with the hope to start getting your personal help and assistance as you promised before signing up; however, you never got back to me. I sent you a private message, also sent you (as you asked for in the bonus area) a “PPG Message” in the forum and nothing happened. As simple as this, you never responded to me. I am a little bit dissapointed of your behaviour but that’s ok, as you say in this post, I need to be a baby, if I fall, I just need to get up and get back to running.

P.S. An advice with all due respect: Don’t make false promises because this can hurt your image in the long-run. God Bless You.

Faith December 4, 2011 at 3:48 am

You really know how to hit the nail on the head. Unfortunately that are so many folks that expect to jump right in and go, when in fact, everyone needs to go slow and actually learn what we want to do before expecting to see any real results. Of course in any field there will be ‘naturals’ that come and go, but for the majority of us that just isn’t the case.

Thank you for continually providing awesome content PotPieGirl!

Vi with "Gotta Love Internet Marketing" December 4, 2011 at 3:09 pm

What a great analogy! *she says as she dusts off the dirt from her recent tumble, thanks to this thing called Panda* lol

Tarrytown Dentist December 5, 2011 at 5:20 am

I wanted to be a baby but situation demands an adult mind. Matured and disciplined, thanks for bringing this up. Quite insightful.
