The family knows spring has sprung when I start talking flowers and my flower beds.
I love ALL the flowers…and I want ALL the flower beds EVERYWHERE around my home. Flowers make me SO happy! Like literally, they make my heart sing!
Sadly, my thumb isn’t very “green”, but I try (my poor poor flowers haha!)
My neighbor has AH-MAZING flower beds (that make ME green with envy!) so I asked him for some basic tips to help my flower beds grow and look like his.
He said:
✅ First things first, getting your soil ready is super important for happy flowers. Think of it like building a strong foundation for a tall building. Good soil helps the flower roots grow strong and healthy.
✅ Before you start digging and getting your hands dirty, make sure there aren’t any secret pipes or wires hiding underground.
✅ When you touch the soil, it shouldn’t be soaking wet or dusty dry. It needs to be just a little bit damp, like a squeezed-out sponge. If it’s too wet or too dry, it makes it hard for the roots to grow.
✅ Your soil needs yummy food to help your flowers grow big and beautiful. This food is called compost. It’s like giving your plants their vitamins! You mix it into the soil before you plant.
✅ Do everything you can to keep the pesky weeds away from your precious flowers. Weeds are like the bullies in the garden. You can put a thick layer of something like wood chips on top of the soil – that’s called mulch – to help block them from growing. It also helps keep the soil moist so your flowers don’t get thirsty too quickly.
Above all: GOOD soil prep is THE most important part of a healthy, gorgeous flower bed!
(and honestly, that’s where I think I mess up – I’m always in such a hurry to get the flowers PLANTED and don’t take the time to make sure the dirt they’re planted IN is a healthy place for them to grow!)
So, now I’m ready to try again this year (and they WILL be beautiful – or else… haha!)
Let me share with you the 48 or so flower bed design ideas I’ve collected for this year’s “Here’s What I Want To Do, Honey” project (not to be confused with a Honey DO list, but yard projects we can do together).
