27 Quick Easy Vegetable Side Dishes For Party Events
Party planning is no small feat, but if there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that side dishes can be the unsung heroes of any event (I’m talking to YOU, street corn casserole – yum!).
While the main course might get all the attention, a strong lineup of vegetable-based sides can elevate your spread from good to unforgettable.
And let’s face it—sometimes it’s the sides that people end up raving about long after the party is over (yep, again, I’m talking to you street corn casserole!)
BUT – there are some things to know when planning your dinner party side dishes:
Planning Side Dishes 101
1. Mix It Up
Include a mix of flavors, textures, and colors (e.g., a creamy dish, a crunchy salad, a roasted vegetable).
Balance rich, hearty sides with lighter, fresher options.
2. Make Ahead When Possible
Choose dishes that can be prepped in advance to minimize stress on the day of the party.
Dishes like casseroles, salads, and roasted veggies can often be made earlier in the day or reheated.
3. Consider Dietary Restrictions
This is a big one: Check with guests for any allergies or dietary preferences.
Have at least one vegetarian, gluten-free, or dairy-free option if needed.
4. Complement the Main Dish
Ensure the sides enhance and don’t overpower the main course.
For a rich entrée, opt for a lighter side; for a simple protein, go for something flavorful.
5. Keep It Simple Yet Elegant
I’m a big fan of keeping things simple and try super hard to not over-complicate things – a well-seasoned, roasted vegetable can be just as impressive as a gourmet dish.
6. Balance Hot and Cold Dishes
If oven space is limited, plan for some sides that can be served at room temperature or cold.
Example: Serve a side salad or coleslaw alongside baked dishes.
7. Portion Smartly
Plan for about 1/2 to 1 cup per person per side.
Offer a variety but don’t go overboard.
3-4 sides are usually enough.
8. Use Serving Dishes Wisely
Choose platters and bowls that keep food at the right temperature.
AND – Label dishes if they contain common allergens (e.g., nuts, dairy, gluten).
9. Test Recipes in Advance
If trying something new, do a trial run before the event to avoid surprises (trust me on this – you do NOT want to find out a side dish recipe is EWWWW at your event!)
10. Garnish for a Beautiful Presentation
A sprinkle of fresh herbs, a drizzle of olive oil, or toasted nuts can make dishes look more appealing (remember, people “eat with their eyes” first).
