Hurry Up! Fail Faster!

by PotPieGirl on April 22, 2009 · 52 comments

Why Mistakes Matter -

How many things in your life have you not even tried because you were afraid of screwing up?  Is fear of failure keeping you from taking any action?   Hey, that is not an uncommon fear – don’t feel alone.  Just keep this in mind -  We are not born with these fears. Somehow, somewhere, we learn them.  So, how do you move these fears out of your mentality so you can get to work?  Can you make money online in spite of your fear of failure?

Me and the Wii

I bought my wonderful hubby a Wii video game console for our anniversary in January (New Years Day to be exact in case anyone wants to send gifts).

I’m not a video game person, but watching PotPieDude and the kids play made me see how much more fun Wii is than traditional video games.

But- there was a problem.  I don’t know HOW to work the Wii and play all the games.  I was gonna have to learn if I wanted to get to the other side and be competitive (read that as: so I could kick their butts at all the games….lol!)

So, I got them to show me how it all works.  Advice and instructions were being yelled at me from all angles of the room.  Worse yet, they were laughing at me as I tried to learn how to move and what buttons to push and all that good stuff.

I felt awkward and uncomfortable.  I didn’t see myself getting better and I considered just giving up.  Hey, there’s nothing like a FOUR year old laughing at you because you look so silly trying to do something “so easy”.

Ugh.

Golf Lessons

When I was in the golf business, and still to this day, I will help people learn how to golf.  The most important part of learning to play is learning how to line up over the golf ball.  This is the foundation that your entire golf golf-twistedgame is built upon (kinda like the One Week Marketing of golf).

So, I have them put their feet shoulder-width apart, correct grip, left arm straight, butt out, spine good, get the ball set correct in their stance, etc etc etc.  In short, I’ve got these poor people ALL twisted up.

The first thing I ask after I have them all set up over the ball -

“Are you comfortable?”

If they tell me that yes, they ARE comfortable – there’s something wrong and we back off and try it all again.

There is NOTHING about the golf swing that is normal to your everyday life.  You should feel totally uncomfortable and awkward.  Over time of repetition, you will start to feel comfortable over the ball AND you will have a great foundation for every shot you take in golf.

But it all starts with getting UNcomfortable and learning solid basics to build your swing on.

Golf, Wii, and Internet Marketing… say HUH?

Ok, you’re wondering what golf and Wii games have to do with internet marketing.  To me, they have a LOT to do with it.  They are gentle reminders of all the things we could do in life IF we conquer the learning curve and make our mistakes.

When you are learning something new, you WILL be out of your comfort zone.  You WILL screw up, you WILL make mistakes…and yes, you very well WILL have some failures.

GOOD!

The ONLY way to the ‘other side’ is to MAKE your mistakes and your screw ups AND your failures.

Then, you can check ‘em off the list and get to success FASTER.

But the only way to get to the other side is to get OUT of your comfort zone and be willing to learn how to line up over the ball….and then keep trying and trying and trying until it becomes second nature for you.

Reality is, the comfort zone really ISN’T that comfortable.  Sure, it’s FAMILIAR, but are you truly comfortable there?

Are you willing to make yourself feel vulnerable, and awkward and uncomfortable to take your life to a new level?

Can you imagine a year from today and you NOT having to worry about how you’re going to pay the bills?

What’s Holding You Back?

Go ahead, make a list of all the things you can think of that are holding you back from getting to real work online.  Seriously, write them down and face them – then burn it.

My list might have looked like this a few years ago:

1. Have no idea what I’m doing.

2.  Afraid this is all a scam.

3. Other people tell me I will fail.

4.  Other people tell me this is a scam.

tired-at-computer5. This will take a LOT of time to get there.

6. My computer is slow.

7.  I like to golf on the weekends…don’t want to work.

8.  Easier to just go get a JOB and let someone pay me a little and then I go home.

9.  Not sure I have enough money to do this.

10. Not sure I have enough SMARTS to do this.

11.  I read in marketing forums and I have NO CLUE what they’re talking about.

12.  No one will help me.

13. If I ask for help, people will laugh at me.

14.  If I ask for help, no one will answer.

15. No one understands what I am trying to do because *I* can’t even explain it.

16. I don’t have enough time.

17. This won’t happen over-night.  I have to be determined and persistent – and give up a lot of any free time I have.

18.  There are so many ways to do this – I don’t know which way to go!

19. I don’t know anything about marketing.

20.  I am gonna have to write…a LOT.  I don’t think I can come up with anything to write about.

21. Trying this will put a lot of strain on my family, both financially and time-wise.  I should just take the easy route and not bother with this internet marketing stuff .

Those are just 21 reasons right off the top of my head.  Anything sound familiar there?

Now, let me take that same list and tell you the TRUTH

1. Have no idea what I’m doing.

NO ONE knows what they’re doing when they first start.  We ALL have to learn.  Everything you learn gets you closer to the other side.

2.  Afraid this is all a scam.

It’s not.  The online marketing I teach is NOT a scam.  It’s very, very real.

little-girl-sticking-tongue-out3. Other people tell me I will fail.

Usually these “other” people are folks who don’t know anything about internet marketing either.  Also, why do you put value in the opinion of someone who tells you that you WILL fail?  By the way, proving them wrong is kinda cool  =)

4.  Other people tell me this is a scam.

Again, this is usually said by people who have no idea about all this either.

5. This will take a LOT of time to get there.

This is correct.  It WILL take a good bit of time and effort on YOUR part to get there.

6. My computer is slow.

Great!  There is no better motivation to earn money than having a computer that can’t think as fast as you do.  Get started, make some money and buy a NEW computer.

7.  I like to golf on the weekends…don’t want to work.

What if you gave up a few weekend golf rounds in this next year so you could play golf  3 times a week all the years following?

8.  Easier to just go get a JOB and let someone pay me a little and then I go home.

Yup, easier…maybe.  Depends on where you live and what jobs are available.  This is the safe route and if you have mouths to feed with no money coming into the household, I HIGHLY recommend getting a”real” job while you learn internet marketing.

9.  Not sure I have enough money to do this.

If you’ve read thru my blog here at PotPieGirl.com enough, you know that it doesn’t take money to get started making money online.

10. Not sure I have enough SMARTS to do this.

You do.  If you’ve been using your computer all this time for browsing, emailing, socializing, and shopping, you are totally smart enough to get your computer to make money for you.

11.  When I read in marketing forums I have NO CLUE what they’re talking about.

If they say a phrase you don’t understand, Google it.  Learn what they are talking about.  Once you learn it, you OWN it.

12.  No one will help me.

Learn how to help yourself.  Trust me, 99.9999% of the answers can be found in Google.

13. If I ask for help, people will laugh at me.

Maybe, but that’s a sure sign of that persons integrity and character.  BUT, there are tons of folks online that WON’T laugh at you.  This is a big reason why I am such an advocate of newbies getting a membership at Wealthy Affiliate.  The forum there is so safe with lots of helpful people AND there are lots of other questions being asked by people just like you every minute.  Wealthy Affiliate is the safest learning center I have found online.  I wish I had joined there when I first started learning.

Also, Google NEVER laughs or casts judgement =)

14.  If I ask for help, no one will answer.

Google ALWAYS answers.

15. No one understands what I am trying to do because *I* can’t even explain it.

That’s ok.  Want a “generic” answer for when people ask what you do?

Them: So, what do you do for a living?

You: Online marketing

Them: What’s that?  Like eBay or something?

You: I sell other peoples products online and make commissions.

95% of casual acquaintances won’t ask you anything further.  I struggled with that “what do you do?” question for so long.  I also felt this need to explain what it is (and that it’s legit).  One day I realized that when I was a managing golf Pro, I just said what I did and no one asked or doubted it’s legitimacy.  Sure, that was a “real” job…but you know what?  So is internet marketing.  Say it with confidence.

16. I don’t have enough time.

If you can spend one hour a day getting one web page online, you have enough time.  No, you may not get ‘there’ as quickly as someone who has 10 hours a day.  But there is another positive side to the “not enough time” excuse.

Once upon a time, I was a single mom, running a golf course.  Trust me, there was not an extra MINUTE in the day to spare.  A woman in a regional golf association asked me to run for President of that association.  I literally said, “Are you crazy?  I barely have time to THINK let alone head up an association!”

She said, “Jennifer, I KNOW how full your days are, but let me tell you something I have learned.  If you want something done well and efficiently, give it to a woman who doesn’t have enough time to do it.”

C’mon moms, show of hands – How many of you have baked a “oops mom I forgot” batch of cupcakes or done a science project at 2 am?

We moms get things done  =)

17. This won’t happen over-night.  I have to be determined and persistent – and give up a lot of any free time I have.

This IS very, very true.  This does NOT happen over-night.  Commit to the plan and take action.  Trust me, you will love yourself for following thru down the road  =)

18.  There are so many ways to do this – I don’t know which way to go!

Yes, there are a LOT of options.  To me, that is the coolest thing about online marketing – there is no one ‘right way’ to do this!  The sky is the limit!  What way interests YOU the most?

19. I don’t know anything about marketing.

First off, you don’t need to.  Secondly, yes, you really do know a lot about marketing because we are all consumers.  You know what makes YOU buy something, don’t you?

20.  I am gonna have to write…a LOT.  I don’t think I can come up with anything to write about.

Yes, using the free methods to make money online does require a lot of writing.  Now, you do NOT have to write novel-length blog posts like I am doing right now, but you will have to write.  If this is something out of your comfort zone, get to writing so you ARE comfortable.

21. Trying this will put a lot of strain on my family, both financially and time-wise.  I should just take the easy route and not bother with this internet marketing stuff .

This was a BIG one for me.  Know what it really is?  It’s guilt.  When we have families, we are not only taking OURSELVES out of our comfort zone, the family gets uncomfortable too.  I think we women struggle with this more than the men because of our own perception that it is mom’s job to make everyone comfortable.

I handled this fear in myself by talking a lot about what I was doing.  Each day, when my husband would come home, we would talk about his day then I would tell him things I learned that day, what I did, what I figured out, and all that good stuff.  I needed him onboard with me….and I needed what I was doing to not be such a mystery.  Let’s face it, if your significant other suddenly started spending hours and hours online, wouldn’t you be concerned?

Anyway… I would let him watch me make a Squidoo lens or something.  He was amazed at how it all works and learned right along with me.   I do the same things with my kids.  Heck, I’ve been known to talk about my blog post over a Happy Meal with the 4 year-old  =)

My best advice here is to keep the communication open.

The Other Side

The other side is amazing.  You always have enough time.  Others totally believe in what you’re doing.  You feel awesome knowing you are now helping to make your family more comfortable than they have EVER been, or ever COULD HAVE been if you had taken the easy route and got a “real” job.

Above all, and from my heart…. there is nothing better than feeling successful after you have fought your fears and the nay-sayers and the exhaustion to create positive change in your life.

It literally makes you want to grab others by the shoulders, shake them and scream, “Hurry Up!  Fail faster!  Make your mistakes and hurry to the other side with me!”

I am the worst peer pressure you will ever meet.  If you have a computer and an internet connection, don’t even try and tell me you don’t have options.

I am that person who had no marketing education, no internet technology experience (or understanding) – heck, I could barely re-program the clock on our coffee maker!  But I’m here – perhaps in spite of myself, but I’m here.

And I want to shake each of you that are hesitating by the shoulders and beg you to hurry up!  Get out there, get stuff online…make your mistakes then check ‘em off!  You have everything it takes to make money online.

I know you do.

Hello Jennifer; Another great article.

Your 21 reasons (excuses) are spot on…I have said many of those to myself many times.

However, when seems all you do is fail, failing becomes very hard to bear. I have been working online for 5 years on and off. I have only sold one thing, and I found later it was to myself…long story.

I have used online marketing successfully to propel my offline business but I just can’t get it to go otherwise…

So how many times must one fail before there’s success?

Hi Jae =)

“So how many times must one fail before there’s success?”

Wow, what a great question! First off, what is your definition of “success”? Personally, I find success everyday because I am usually trying to learn something everyday, or get something online everyday… once in awhile I actually clear my email inbox (now THAT is success! haha!)

But I think what you’re asking is more related to income and earnings, yes?

I think everyone has their own unique tolerance level for this. How long are you willing to continue? Perhaps this is a good time to step back and re-evaluate what you’ve been doing, which things did show some results or promise, and focus on them? Have you been trying different things, or mainly one method?

Also, you mentioned that you’ve used online marketing successfully to propel your offline business…great! Perhaps you’re on to something there that could help OTHER offline business owners?

hey this should motaviate people i to was scared of been scammed and people said it pointless trying to make money online you not going to do that well i am learning all the time and want to make a better life.

People are just jealous they cant earn as much money lol they so quick to judge even before finding out the facts!

Millions of people work from home…..hopefully i will be next thanks jennifer!

roro April 22, 2009 at 12:46 pm

Lol:)…my husband said that is not true that you can make money online, than that is a scam and that I’ll not get the check. When my first check arrived, he joked that it’s faked…

Valorie April 22, 2009 at 4:09 pm

This made me cry:
We moms get things done =)

What you’ve written here is so true! In fact, it is so true for me, that I convinced my husband to walk away from his job (which he hates and is killing him) at the end of May. In this economy.

I am organized and prepared, and have already ramped up my hours working in my home office. My plan is One Week Marketing and PLR package WSO’s (with more than just the articles, so the buyers get great value).

Now I make the transition from stay at home mom, to sole provider mom! I am in my thirties and have never been so scared and excited in my life! I feel more alive than I have in years. Sometimes it takes MASSIVE action to get a new life started.

Jaebird88 April 22, 2009 at 4:44 pm

Thank you for the reply. Using the online marketing techniques has helped me offline…to a degree. I have recently moved into helping small business use the same techniques that I did to become successful, however, the business is new and I have not gotten a single client…I have only been at it for about 2 weeks now.

what I do is try something like OWM and just concentrate on that one thing, if I can make it a go then I keep on with it…

so far, not so much…

Hi Jennifer

Great article! You just keep getting better and better!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Ron April 23, 2009 at 12:58 am

I still have faith in OWM and you!!

theverysmartguy April 23, 2009 at 6:24 pm

I am glad to finally meet a non-hype marketer. Someone who would rather be up front with everything, than to sugar coat it and say you will be millionaires in 1 month (or weeks as I have seen some say..lol).

I love the OWM!!

Just to let people know, that this is pretty much a plan to form habits with. You continue doing this (training yourself), and it will become second nature, and you will hardly have to think about.

Eventually you will learn more, and add in your own little tidbits to the plan, and expand on it.

To sum it all up, IM is all about exposure, the more exposure (correction, the MORE RELEVANT exposure) the better.

Remember, those $5/day campaigns really do add up. hehehe

So, keep making those lens, keep making blog posts, and creating your own sites. Keeping getting your relevant exposure!! And of course, Keep making money!! =)

PS. Honestly Jennifer, you should win an award for all that you have done with OWM!!

Ciao

theverysmartguy April 23, 2009 at 11:30 pm

Ok, I had to post this here, not sure where else to go and say this. I am TOTALLY TOTALLY amazed right now.

about 12 hours after I put up a post on the 3 free blogs that Jen mentions. I was ranking 11th in 1 of my keywords, and 4 of 6 lenses was indexed. This is just 1 post on 3 blogs. I put up a 2nd one about 5 minutes ago. We shall see how it goes. (oh, and getting some traffic trickling in as well)

OVer the years, I have not seen results happen so fast. I didn’t even do any articles yet (currently working on that)

If you were a singer Jen, you would definatly get a standing ovation from me. =)

My biggest fear is that I don’t dominate english language and I ain’t got a friend who does.

I feel as if my articles were unreadable (as I feel now with this comment!), so I have to learn not only Internet Marketing but english language too!

It is a double learning curve and, of course, it hurts me twice. But I’m keeping fighting and facing my fears ;)

joe April 25, 2009 at 7:38 pm

Hi Jenifer,My problem right now is not knowing what to do next.I have more than a dozen squidoo lenses made and a fair amount of articles pointing to them, and I am getting a little traffic, but no sales,I know I need to iprove the copy, but I have noclue on what to change or what to write.(I am a bit of a dumb__s!) And on a differetn noteI do not believe I recieved my bonus guide for being a OWM previous buyer..Any thanks for all your hard work and help. T/C

Of course that will vary, I’m trying to gauge how many per day I should be posting…thanks

theverysmartguy May 7, 2009 at 5:29 am

emerson,

Just a few questions:
How long have you been working at this? And how many niche have you done the OWM on?
Oh, and how much traffic are you getting?

There are many factors that could be preventing sales. It could be anywhere from, not enough traffic, to you are getting people to early in the buying cycle.

Remember, a lot of the times its a numbers game. This is why the OWM wants you to market that niche for a week, then let it sit, and move on to the next, and rinse and repeat. Eventually you should make a hit. And then, like is says, once it makes a hit, you refine your marketing plan a little more to capture more traffic.

Now, lets say you are getting 100 visitors a day, and have a CTR of about 15%, so that is 15 clicking through to the merchant page. Now, lets say they in converts 1:30. That is about 3 sales per 100 visitors you send. But that does not mean it happens symmetrically, its something that will work itself out over time.

So, again, there are a lot of things to consider. This is why we track our traffic, seeing how many times they click, and pick merchants that will help out visitors, that have a healthy conversion rate.

Now, another thing that I do notice is this: If you are targeting a niche that is based off of a very competitive market, they may keep seeing the same product over and over and over again, this can possibly result in a lower than average conversion rate.

Now, one way to solve this is to use a product in your niche that is laser targeting for that niche, meaning in pretty much solves JUST that problem they are having, not a bunch of other things as well. Why? Because this means that the sales page will be targeting to solve that SPECIFIC problem.

Sometimes this can be pretty hard to find, but if you search hard enough you should be able to find something.

Well, its hard to help with out knowing all the facts. So this is about it for now. I hope that helps a bit, if not, maybe Jen can give you hand. If not, you can always contact me here, and leave an email if you want. Up to you.

Ciao for now.

PotPieGirl May 7, 2009 at 7:49 am

Wow, VerySmartGuy…you are uh, very smart! ;)

That was a fantastic response and I couldn’t have said it any better myself.

I would, however, like to repeat something you said in case anyone missed it:

“Now, one way to solve this is to use a product in your niche that is laser targeting for that niche, meaning in pretty much solves JUST that problem they are having, not a bunch of other things as well. Why? Because this means that the sales page will be targeting to solve that SPECIFIC problem.

We have winner!

Thanks again!

I just discovered this blog, lots of good advice there. I like your plan of action of doing things. selling squidoo lenses and building niche sites.
I have a small query If you could answer that here it goes – How do you put aff links on a lens when they are not allowed.
Do you link directly to your hoplink or cloak them in some way.

Luke May 13, 2009 at 11:55 am

If im not mistaken, you can still put aff links on a lens. just use this code in the write module… < a href="YOURAFFLINK">TEXT YOU WANT

You may be mistaken for ezinearticles.com, because I know that they do not allow affiliate links.

Hope that helps
Luke

Luke May 13, 2009 at 11:59 am

Whoops, it automatically links the text on this blog if you use this code. I’ll put 2 periods in there to seperate it.

TEXTYOUWANT

Ignore the 2 dots that i put in there…if i didnt it would show up like it did in the last post

I must admit that I am uncomfortable working online. I am also fiercely afraid of failure and disappointment. That’s why I had to be a slave to a low-paying middleman for more than a year before I woke up and decided I had to take a leap of faith and just try things on my own.

I gave myself three months to succeed. It was the same amount of time before my family starved to death. I hadn’t succeeded yet within my specified time frame so I have to go back to a “real” risk-free job. BUT I am not about to give up. It may be tougher for me now but I’m determined to make it.

Fantastic post, Jennifer. You get straight to the heart of the matter. Fail faster! I am going to send the URL for this to my husband for him to read, so he understands what I’m into and how there ARE genuine lovely people giving such valuable information and motivation.

How can we fail with you leading us in the right direction and gently kicking our butts? Only if we fail to take action.

Thank you so much – you could just make your money and relax, but you put so much out there to help people. I do hope that all is calm and that graduation and wedding went swimmingly, AND that you are properly recovered from operation.

Best wishes, Anne

Jennifer,

You’re absolutely correct!
In order for us to succeed in IM we must get out of our comfort zone and face our fears. Another thing that works for me is focusing on what I want. In this case I want to succeed at online Internet Marketing. So, I will focus on it and visualize myself succeeding. This works to my advantage! Because in my mind I am already successful and I just do all the things that a successful Internet Marketer would focus on.

I especially liked tip #6. Thanks for the chuckle. As always, great post and oh so true. I think that we can all relate.

How To Build a List November 7, 2009 at 6:18 pm

Jenn, you have a longer list of excuses than I do!

Yikes!!

…means I have no choice but to succeed BIG time!

:-)

Thanks for the encouragement.

What a great post.

I was really impressed by the Will Smith video you sent out yesterday, and the quote that went something like. ‘There’s no need for a Plan B – It only distracts you from Plan A.”

I’m finding that to be very true – I have a problem with being distracted by bright shiny things, so I’m making a real effort to focus all my effort on ONE system. I’ve been at it for about a month, and it’s starting to pay off with sales. I’ve got half my lenses on the front page of Google, now it’s just a matter of getting them to #1 before Xmas :D

Thanks for all the encouragement.

I guess the number 17 hit home. I actually have some money to invest in this (have loads of things collecting dust on my hard drive), I have time (I am an entrepeneur), yet I still am afraid, that I’d be investing time and money on a niche that does not deliver. I’d settle for $20 a month, just that I’d know for sure it works.

Dammit Jennifer, you do have a way with words!

The ability to use words to ‘paint pictures in the mind’ is a wonderful, and very useful, ability.

And you sure have a bunch of it :-)

And now a hint for your readers who may be struggling with writing – just write! , let it flow, don’t get distracted by fixing grammor or spelling as you go.

Get the words out – tidy up later.

Absolutely brilliant. Thank you.

My barrier is – hit page 1 and number 1 in Google a bunch of times, but never got traffic anywhere near Google Adwords estimates. Not even close.

Rinse and repeat still hasn’t shown its pretty face since I launched a couple of dozen campaigns six months ago. Instead of surfacing they disappear from Google.

Notwithstanding, you won’t find better top notch quality training material than Wealthy Affiliate, One Week Marketing and Step-By-Step. Real value!

Hi Jennifer:

I always value your blog postings. I appreciate your straight forward and down to earth style of communication and willingness to share your knowledge.

I purchased OWM a couple months back, and I am beginning to reap the rewards of my work. It’s an exciting process and I truly enjoy what I am doing.

I thank you again for laying out a step-by-step process for newbies to follow so we may each create our own online success story.

Best to you,
Ammie

Hello PotPieGirl

A while back you had a post up to help people put a box on Squidoo to capture people’s email in exchange for a free gift. I would like to learn how to do that.

could you please advice me on where on your site you have that advice?

I enjoy reading all your posts and email you send me.

Cheers Hanne

Great stuff. Your article is right on the money. Making excuses is easy, but the reward for building your business is much greater.
