Is Squidoo Dying?
If I had a dime for everytime I’ve read that on the internet… wow, I’d be a VERY rich woman! In the two plus years I’ve been part of the Squidoo community, the claims of “Squidoo is Dead!” have been never-ending. First off, I want to say this… if these reports of the death of Squidoo keep the spammers away, then yeah, move along….Squidoo is a goner. BUT, if YOU are genuinely working on the Squidoo.com site, let’s talk for a minute and maybe I can shed some light on why your lenses aren’t being picked up by Google and/or staying in the Google index. (yup… I’ve got another PotPieGirl video! Fancy graphics and all! haha!)
Perhaps THIS Is Why Your Lens Won’t Rank in Google?
It’s well after 1am for me and I am BEAT…. like, totally worn out. My hands are killing me from typing as I again made the futile attempt to catch up on email. I THOUGHT I was doing pretty well today – that is, until I got to Wealthy Affiliate forum and saw my Private Messages…lol
Just look:
EIGHTY-THREE private messages! Holy Smokes! Even if each message “only” takes two MINUTES to open, read, respond and send – thats, what? 166 minutes…. almost 3 HOURS! Oh boy, do I sure need a clone! I answered a ton today, but if by chance YOUR message or email is still out there, please be patient with me. I am truly honored that so many folks want to have a minute or two of my time…and I do the very, very best I can.
Ok, back on topic….
So…
Is Squidoo Dead?
I made this video tonight (uhhh… this morning) to answer that very question. My hope is that this video will shed some light and spread some insight as to what is happening at Squidoo.com.
I imagine a follow up video will be needed here. The technique I use was skimmed over since I was short on time since I keep all my videos under 5 minutes (time is precious, right? And who wants to listen to ME ramble endlessly? haha!)
Aside from a follow up video…. does THIS video shed any light on what is happening over at Squidoo or to YOUR lenses?

I’m a night owl,too.LOL! I have also been seeing people in forums complaining about Squidoo and declaring it dead. These are usually people who think it’s a get rich quick scheme and get disillusioned when they find out different. They also seem to be people who don’t want to take the time to do keyword research or write original content. One of the first things I do when I’m considering a lens topic is check to see how many other lenses there are on the same topic. I’ve found that chances are if a Clickbank product is more than a couple of months old and has a high gravity there will already be numerous lenses promoting it. If I can’t find a keyword to use that hasn’t been done to death I move on and pick another product. This is not really time consuming either. It only takes a few minutes.
If people who use Squidoo would take your advice and concentrate on their keywords and subject matter instead of making their lenses a hard sell of their product then they would find that it still works just fine.

This seems to be a really hard thing to help people understand! They see the gravity is high and think that’s all they need to know.
Just checked one I get all the time at LearnItStepbyStep.com. Even though the keyword seems to be fairly non competitive there is 2400 lenses at squidoo about the keyword!! WOW.
No wonder people’s new lenses on this topic are not getting indexed.

April 8th, 2009 at 12:49 pmhey jen great video that very useful to know most people copy other people and dont realise the potential of long tail high searched low competition keywords. I had the keyword i was testing “maverick money maker review” only 800 pages and 10 or somthing in the intitle…inanchor command, it got indexed in google within hours and was 2,300 in squidoo the next day and i hadnt even start building links. I think you should all take a leaf out of this lady book!!

Although you have preached keywords all along… you have just now penetrated the ashen tissues of my brain with the video i.e. the significance of utilizing the technology to read google’s pulse. Hence my originality is not original unless they say it is (Duh!) My business partner is ex CIA, but you’ve taught me more about intel here in 5 minutes than he has in 5 years. Great work and thanks for completing that prior to the final banzai attack of the sleep monsters! A great video and to answer you question No Squidoo is not dying! I will add this video technique to part of my keyword research as I do use Squidoo as my landing page in all the articles I write like a good One Week Marketer should!
I would add you can also add the search phrase
site:squidoo.com intitle:”Panic Away” inanchor:”Panic Away”
for a clear understanding of what the competition is for that product, those that use the product name as part of the keyword.

Great video PotPieGirl. I think a lot of the people who go off on a forum rant about a technique/website being dead is actually someone baiting people to read their post. I still believe that squidoo is a great tool. I’ll keep putting the lenses up while it’s working. It does help considerably to do a bit of link building for each lens. hubpages does seem to get search engine rankings easier.

I´ve been trying to use Squidoo to rank for non english pages, but it doesn´t work the same way the english pages. I feel anger, because I´m a big fan of Squidoo too. I guess I have to find another way.

I had seen the tool on Google for having it analyze existing websites for it’s top keywords but I never used it. This gives me an idea for my current website in that I can look at what Google thinks my website is about! Thanks for posting this! I’ll be checking out more of your videos and information.

Yes, that was a quick spin – you can probably do some development with that idea. The next step would be to check further on viability through all the channels to see if you can get paid with that long tail keyword.
I agree with you though. I am currently resisting spinning something without real meat in it. I keep thinking about real writers from the past – they were unique in that they wanted to bring something chewy to the world – today’s writer seems superficial in comparison
May 21st, 2009 at 11:09 pmGreat video Jennifer. Took me a while to realize that I had to be in my Adwords account before the “website content” option would show up in the Adwords Tool.
Squidoo is far from dead. I have at least six of my lenses appearing on page 1 of Google for multiple keywords.
I discovered during the week that if I add a new lens to a featured lens module within my Squidoo authority site (PR4), then the new lens was automatically indexed by Google within 48 hours, sometimes within 24 hours, without my doing anything else. This happened to five lenses in a row, even though the content of the new lenses was very different to that of authority site. Squidoo is alive and well! It does reinforce your point, though, that Google is looking for depth and/or difference – not the same, superficial stuff.
