My Article Marketing Strategy

One Article – 5 Steps – Tons of Backlinks

Article marketing for backlinks does NOT have to be a hair-pulling, confusing, punch your monitor experience. I have my own article marketing strategy that I use over and over…and it works pretty darn well. Know how many articles you need? One. Yes, just one good article is all you need to get through my simple 5 step article marketing process. Think you can do that? If so, keep reading and let’s walk through this step-by-step.

Article Marketing for Backlinks

Before we get going I want to make a few things clear.

1. This article marketing strategy is for the primary purpose of building back links. If these articles send me traffic, great – if they rank well, also great….but those are all bonuses. I want back links that help MY sites and web pages rank better in Google. That is the primary goal of this strategy.

If you are interested in doing article marketing to directly make money, read my free e-course, The DAM Way.

2. I will be talking about spinning articles. Do NOT freak out and think this is complicated, hard, or time consuming. The way I do this is NOT any of those things. I like things simple, remember? Why work harder than you need to?

Also, I am NOT going to even HINT at mass-submitting tons of spun crap onto the internet. If you’ve wandered the internet at all, you know exactly what I am talking about. These articles all read well and add value to the sites they are placed on.

3. I am NOT talking about submitting the SAME article all over the internet. I don’t believe in doing this – I also don’t believe in the “one massive blast of the same article and done” concept. I like a steady and LONG TERM drip of back links going to my sites and I like them to come from articles I am proud to have on the internet.

If the “one big blast of the same article everywhere” technique works for you – Great! I’m not a fan…and in the time it takes to do that, I can do my strategy which I feel works better for all involved.

4. I LOVE “Set and Forget” Strategies. This IS a “set and forget” article marketing process. After step one is done, you can do all the other steps in an hour or so….and then you don’t touch it for at least 4 months. BUT, this strategy WILL continue to drip links back to your content the entire time. THAT is what I like… a steady stream of backlinks being built and found – and I don’t have to do anything!

Ok, to sum up, we are learning article marketing for backlinks in a way that will improve our ranking AND add value to the internet (and not take hours and hours to do it). This is a “set and forget” process that takes a bit of your time NOW and will continue to be working FOR you for at least the next 4 months.

Let’s get started…we have a lot to cover.

Step 1 – One Good Article

Yep, that is all you need for my article marketing strategy – One Good Article.

And right now, I can feel the back button clicks start happening…

What?!??!? WRITE ?!?!?!? Me?!?! Nooooooooo, I can’t do that!

Yes you can. YES. YOU. CAN. Hear me?

What we want to do is write one really good article. We want this article to have it’s own unique title, be well-written, and be designed to also get click-throughs to our site/web page. About 400 words is fine.

If You REALLY Can’t Write – Or At Least THINK You Can’t Write…

Or, you just want a MUCH easier way to crank good articles out and do this article marketing process faster – take a look at this article writing software. Seriously, take a moment and watch the video to see what it does. It’s awesome, it’s fast, I have it, I love it (and it makes my article writer nervous because she thinks I won’t need her anymore…lol!).

So, if you can’t write, or want to write faster, use this software and get your really good article written.

Step 2 – Submit Article To Ezine Articles

The article you wrote is going to EzineArticles.com first. No matter what anyone says or thinks, EzineArticles is a top place to place your article for good rankings, traffic, good back links, AND the potential to have your article picked up and syndicated by other sites.

Write your one good article, submit it to EzineArticles.com and wait until it is published (very important – do not start step 3 until this article is live and online at EzineArticles.com)

This is the only article that we really DO want to rank and send traffic – and this article is the core component for the rest of the copy/paste steps.

Step 3 – Article Submission Service #1

Now that our one good article is published on EzineArticles, it’s time to move on to step 2. The rest of these steps can be done whenever you want to. I usually take an hour and do all of them at one time. It’s a bit of “copy/paste” but not a lot of WORK or brain power (just the way I like it…Can you tell I made this strategy for ME? hahaha!)

Now, take that article that is now published on EzineArticles and put it into this article submission service. You can have THREE links IN the content of articles for this service…and that is AWESOME!

So paste your article into the submit article area. Then, link it up the way you want. Now, use the built in “spin” tool to get your article to create a unique version each time it is published. It’s easy enough to do – there is a video that teaches you how.

Note: if you used this article writing software, you don’t need to spin again. Just copy the article from the software (with the spintax or whatever the coding is that makes it spin is called) and then paste it into this submission service.

Choose your categories, set how many to go out each day (I choose unlimited….that usually gets me a few each day) and the submit it.

Done.

Here’s why I like this submission service so much.

1. You get THREE in content links to your sites/web pages in each article. No resource box…no footprints. This service is not about getting your articles out there FAST, it’s about getting GOOD back links out there in a slow-drip fashion.

2. I have 80+ Sites in that network that RECEIVE content. So far, my sites have accepted and published almost 5,000 articles from OTHER PEOPLE. My sites are good – many have a good Page Rank…and I don’t accept articles that are not spun to a good uniqueness. I don’t want crap on my sites..and that works best for all of us.

My sites also pass ranking value well. (If you don’t know how to test to see if your article marketing strategy passes ranking value, read my niche site guide. There is a good way to test it). I have tested this service, I use it, I KNOW the sites *I* have in the network, and I feel very comfortable recommending it to others.

If you’d prefer another article network, you can try this one. It’s not quite as good and doesn’t have all the rank tracking and stuff that mine does, but it’s ok.

Ok, step 2 complete =)

Step 4 – Submission Service #2

This second submission service submits your articles in a unique version to a whole other big network of sites. It also “spins” the article a bit differently so you are contributing even more unique content on the internet.

BOTH of these services allow me to have many, many unique versions of my article title, too – and that is SUPER important to help you get the most out of this article marketing strategy. Lots and lots of unique titles, got it? (yes, that was a BIG hint)

This second service allows for TWO links in a bio box area, BUT you can also set it to have tons of versions of your bio box (and your anchor text)- also a VERY good thing.

Ok, so now have your article in Submission Service #1 open in one tab and the have the form to submit your article into submission service #2 open in another tab. (I have dual monitors/expanded desktop over two computer monitors – this is a BIG help for things like this, but don’t ask me how I managed to make it work. I think I beat my computer into submission…lol).

Now, at the bottom of the view article screen in service #1 there is a button that says “spin” – click it and a new version of your article will appear – highlight the article and then paste it into the place for the first version in service #2. Click “spin” again, and then paste that into the box for the second version, click “spin” again…and then paste into the box for the third version. (the second service takes 3 versions of an article and makes unique versions out of them. You can use their spinning option to make them even more unique, but you don’t have to).

Now, give each article a new title, add more titles, add in your resource box with HTML links to your sites/ web pages, choose your keywords and categories and let ‘er rip.

I usually choose to allow 50 articles go out per day. This works fine for me. Not all get published…not all get found…so this seems to be a good number for me to work with (and it’s what the service recommends).

hint: Become an affiliate for this service to help offset the costs…make it free… or make you LOTS of money. Your articles sent out can have your affiliate link for this service in the bio box…and it helps A LOT

Sound like a lot of work? Guess what? It took me longer to type all that than it ever takes me to DO all that!

In fact, I could probably do THREE articles from step 2 til this point in the time it’s taken me to type the 1600+ words I’ve typed so far.

Step 5 – Everywhere and Anywhere Else

Ok, now you’ve got your article at EzineArticles.com, you have unique versions dripping out slowly in one service and 50 more unique versions going out each day in the second service. This is all being done FOR you everyday… set and forget, right? Right!

Now, we ALSO have our article in two different services that both are creating various unique versions of that first (and only) article we wrote.

Guess what? You can now go into either (or both) of these services and click to “view” your article and get a unique version for you to use anywhere and everywhere else! All you have to do is click “view article” from your list and click either the “spin” button or just refresh (F5) your page… a new unique version will appear.

Kinda cool, huh?

Now, take a unique version and make a Squidoo lens and link it up… make a HubPage… submit it to other article directories…put it on other blogs you have… make a link wheel if you’re into that….submit it on free to use blogs (If you’re a One Week Marketing member, you know some great free blogs to use – HINT!)

Just go copy/paste crazy! Use a unique title – a NEW unique title – each time you put a unique version of your site somewhere else. This is important, ok? Unique titles and unique first paragraphs are really important to get the most out of this.

How Often To Do This Article Marketing Strategy

If you are doing it for one little mini niche site and one round of this process is all you need to work on the keywords you want to rank for – you don’t need to do much else ever again except one step.

After 4 months have passed (make sure it has been OVER 4 months) – go back to step 4, review your article, see if you want to change up the anchor text (no need to touch the article), and then re-send it. Your article will begin dripping out again for the next 4 months (or until it hits all the sites it can – I usually see between 600-900 sites available to take my articles)

If you are working on many keywords or you have many pages on your site you want to rank, repeat this process for all of them. Don’t forget tho, that you get 3 links from step 3 and 2 more links in step 4… you can change them up or spin them, ok?

As for step 5, you can do that for as long as you want, as many times as you want. What I really love about this strategy is this – anytime I am wandering the internet and find a new place that will accept my content with links, I just pop over to service #1 or #2, get a unique version and paste it into the new site. Add a few links, a new title..and I’m done.

What About Making Other BackLinks?

Now I’ll get the questions… “What about social bookmarking?” or “What about blog commenting… forum links…profile links…so-and so’s backlink package or linking service…or….or….or…?”

Do whatever else you want to – or you NEED to do – in order to achieve the ranking you want. Seriously, go for it. All links are good, so get them whenever and wherever you can, ok?

This is how I do MY article marketing. Do other people do it this way? I have no idea. Does it work? Yes, for me it does. I’m not trying to reinvent the wheel here – nor am I saying that the way anyone else does it is wrong… this is just MY way.

I work in low to mid competition markets – it doesn’t take much work for me to rank well… and I LIKE IT that way…lol! This article marketing system I use is usually all I need to get where I want to be (Page 1 in Google, preferably above the fold/top 3). For the niches I work in, this system is almost always plenty and I know that Google is finding new links to my stuff everyday – and I don’t have to DO anything else for that to happen. Make sense?

Bonus Tips For Article Marketing

1. Use as many unique titles as you possibly can.

2. Rewrite/spin your first paragraph as much as you can.

3. Your article does not have to be about the keyword you want to rank for – just something on that general topic.

4. For in-content links, get your first/most important link in the first sentence. Bold it, too.

5. Do not submit crap to the network site owners – we don’t like it and are prone to delete it or not publish it at all. Remember, we opened our sites to others for free (ie, kindness of our hearts and yes, we like receiving free content).

6. Do not submit or spin articles that you do NOT have rights too. Write your own article… you only have to write one so don’t be lazy.

There are no easy ways to success in this business – do your part and do it to the best of your ability. While there is no easy way – there are faster ways…and that is why I use the article marketing system above. I work hard, but I don’t like to work THAT hard…and I like to make the most of my time.

The Short Version

1. Write an article, 400 words or so (use this software if you can’t write).

2. Submit to EzineArticles.com – wait until it is approved and published.

3. Paste, spin and submit article into this article network.

4. Take 3 versions from step 3 and submit to this article submission service.

5. Take unique versions and make web content everywhere else – Squidoo, HubPages, GoArticles, blogs….everywhere you can.

It’s taken me almost 3000 words typed to explain this. In the time to type and post this article marketing tutorial I could have written and sent 7-8 articles into this drip-feed system of mine.

This is NOT hard… everything you need is here laid out exactly how it needs to be done. This is not something you stress over – you do it and forget it. Don’t over-complicate it, ok?

For those who wanted to know, this is how *I* do it. After MANY, MANY ways of trying this in all different ways and fashions, this is the way that a) is the fastest way for me, b) is the easiest to outsource (or outsource some of it), and c) works the best for me and my niche marketing needs.

Will it work for you? Why not try it and find out? Don’t talk yourself out of it – try it =)

Thanks for the awesome post Jennifer!
What do you think about ISnare though, and how does it compare to SEOLink vine?

Jennifer,
You’ve laid out an easy to follow plan for writing one article and getting it to work for you.

I also have the Instant Article Factory software and love, love, love it! At this point, I don’t have the extra money for the linking service. I’m wondering if you happen to have a list of sites they link to?

Also, is there a post on your site about how to create the highlighted text boxes you use. They look similar to the ones on Squidoo.

Thanks,
Theresa

Theresa, Keyword Angel July 17, 2010 at 9:57 pm

I just got my question answered about where to submit my article to for links in the comment above mine from CJ.

He’s written a post about this subject with a list of 25 sites.

Just goes to show that not only does blog commenting help get traffic to your site, it also provides valuable information.

Thanks again,
Theresa

Great article. I really need to get off my bum and start spinning some articles. I think the stigma surrounding spun articles is due to the fact that many people don’t put enough time into them. You get what you put in after all.

R.L.Davis July 17, 2010 at 10:16 pm

You should start a finance co. so all of us that cant afford all this have a way to keep up.

Jonathan July 17, 2010 at 10:16 pm

Great method, Jen. Thanks for sharing it!

PotPieGirl July 17, 2010 at 10:20 pm

Thanks, all!

Theresa – You asked:

“I’m wondering if you happen to have a list of sites they link to?

Also, is there a post on your site about how to create the highlighted text boxes you use. They look similar to the ones on Squidoo.”

The networks I use don’t make public lists of the sites they submit to. Even if they did, they’re not sites where you can just go sign up and submit an article (if that makes sense).

As for the highlighted boxes…. That’s just they way I have my css stylesheet set to format my blockquotes…nothing fancy =)

WOW!! you must be making alot of money from your list with this one!

Have you seen the prices of these services?

I use to be a member of linkvine and found that when my articles were eventually published they were on sites with no PR and most set to NO-FOLLOW. Yes i hear you say that PR is not the be-all and end-all and neither is the -FOLLOW atribute. But you would think that paying good money for these LINKS that most would have the above.

I don’t think you will publish this because of what im about to say.

Go take a look in the warrior forum, for those who dont know its a forum for internet marketers. In this forum you will find some great offers just like the one i found which was offering 50 backlinks. These are links within articles that you submit to a network, a private network of 50 websites. All on different IP addresses and all have PR from 2-6 !! And all have an extensive list of categories in which to place your articles. just like the services you mention you can spin your articles and headlines.

With this service you get access to all the urls of where your articles are placed, this is great of course because with the urls you can ping them and make rss feeds of them and ping them too.

I got all this for $7!!! Not $47 or $67!! come people look around you. All the information you ever need to make money online is there for free, think smart not hard.

PotPieGirl July 17, 2010 at 11:09 pm

Hiya Mike =)

Why wouldn’t I publish your comment? There are many ways to “skin a cat” – it’s up to each of us to determine what works best for us, don’t you think?

As for 50 links for $7 – that wouldn’t be cost-effective for me. That’s one article…and only 50 links. Heck, I’ve got 80+ sites of my own spread out over all kinds of ip addresses (that are also in one of the networks above) so it would be silly for ME to pay $7 for only 50 links – especially with the volume of articles I do each month. It would cost me WAY more.

But that’s not to say that the $7 for 50 links isn’t a good idea for someone else.

This post just outlined my way of doing this =)

Thanks for reading to you and to Donna

Peggy@OnlineMarketingPlan July 17, 2010 at 11:34 pm

Hi Jen,
Article Marketing is definitely my marketing of choice. To have a definitive plan like this laid out makes it so much quicker and easier for all of us to follow. This will make my method more streamlined as well, and I thank you for links to your article submission sites as I have been looking for good ones to join.
We can be so much more effective and efficient as marketers when we have the best tools. :-)

Pavol July 17, 2010 at 11:37 pm

I was thinking about Linkvana, SEOLinkVine or other similar services, but I just am not sure about longevity and quality of the backlinks. I kind of think it is just a matter of time when links coming from services like these will get Google slap of some kind. After all, in Google’s eyes, services like these are creating paid links, thus should be no-follow, not to mention, that the automation of the whole process makes it rather un-natural, at least from the Google’s point of view. So I am staying away from these for now and rather just submit to public article directories than private networks.

hiking July 18, 2010 at 12:05 am

sounds good

PotPieGirl July 18, 2010 at 12:16 am

Gotta say I disagree, Pavol – to me, this is the most resistant back link building we’ve got right now. No different than submitting to public directories, such as EzineArticles (and they don’t no-follow, right?).

I own a bunch of sites that receive this content. I don’t get paid for it. Allowing people to post content on my sites offers me no monetary benefits at all.

To me, that is kinda like saying that blogging will eventually get slapped (that’s what these sites are…blogs).

Good discussion!

Wisdom-Info Highland July 18, 2010 at 12:29 am

Jen, no doubt those tips are great way of generating back links.
Though it look some how tedious but I will start implementing it as soon as possible.

Pavol July 18, 2010 at 1:00 am

I am not against it, I am just a bit concerned that eventually, these services will be viewed by Google as black (or at least gray) hat practice. You pay, you get backlinks. And in order to be published on those blogs, you DO need to pay.

You don’t get paid for it, but in order for anyone to have that article submitted to your blog, they need to pay to the link-building service. It’s a paid membership service after all.

As you said before, it is not a network of blogs that allow people to directly participate. That’s why (and the fact that it closely resembles a link-wheel concept) Google may not like the Follow links in the future.

Of course, that’s just my guess, after all, who really knows what will Google do next…. In fact, I would not be too surprised if Google’s love for Ezine would diminish as well, seeing that Ezine has essentially became affiliate marketer backlink farm (so you are right there, it is not too much different from Linkvana type of services anymore).

Of course, even Ezine has a paid membership, but you pay essentially for better service, not for extra backlinks. So with Ezine you get free backlinks in your bio box, that’s why it’s OK to have them as “Follow”.

PS: I don’t know about the service you promote here, but some time ago I was strongly considering trying Linkvana. However, when I looked at the C+ grade for Linkvana (on IM Report Card), I got hesitant, and checking Warrior Forum (and some other forums) for these type of services made me even more hesitant. Some people swear by it, others… well others basically say what I just did. One service, two completely different opinions and many times also experiences. That’s the SEO world for you ;-).

PS2: this one statement from Linkvana site made made the concern embedded in me more than anything -

“No Risk Unlimited Reward Link Building.
No risk of being discovered by search engines.” -doesn’t sound like a squeaky clean SEO tactic to me. What could the search engines possible discover….? ;-)

PotPieGirl July 18, 2010 at 1:21 am

“No risk of being discovered by search engines.” -doesn’t sound like a squeaky clean SEO tactic to me. What could the search engines possible discover….? ;)

hahahahahhahaha! Good point!

I have a funny feeling that content syndication will be around, and viable, for a long, long time.

Could I be wrong? You bet!

The reality is, ANYTIME you create a link to your own content for the purpose of improving your ranking, you are going against Google’s wishes. Based on that, paid sites, free sites, forum links, profile links, blog commenting, and ALL that stuff isn’t really kosher – but it’s a necessary evil to survive online.

I like to do it in a way that at least I am contributing some quality information to the internet… and hey, I get a link back to my site, too =)

Thank you for participating in this discussion!

Jen,

I know a lot of people are afraid to post information like this on their blogs now a days because they were slapped by Google.

I applaud you for still giving this information out for free and even though I can’t afford the services yet I have other options available to me that I can use with the same idea that you explain here.

Thanks again,

Thanks for outlining a really good and easy way of getting backlinks to our sites.

The unfortunate part about our business is that if you are trying to do everything yourself it does cost – either time or money.

You either have to spend weeks creating the same number of backlinks that these automated services do or you pay your money and move on with the next task – I know that there are only so many articles that I can write about hemorrhoid treatment or building chicken coops without going mad!

The two systems that you have recommended are fine, but for those that may find the monthly fee a bit much then have a hunt around in forums because there are some great deals going – but please also be careful because there are also plenty of sharks!

Sorry Jennifer, I’ve gone on too long (again) Thanks again for this simple backlink building method.

Pavol July 18, 2010 at 1:42 am

“…content syndication will be around…”
“The reality is, ANYTIME you create a link…”
- So true! I think you nailed it the most here:
“…at least I am contributing some quality…”
You are right – if you contribute some quality to the internet, you should be rewarded (with the backlink).

Thanks for letting me participate.

Rolf Versluis July 18, 2010 at 2:41 am

Jennifer,

I had been trying to figure out SEO for my brick and mortar business for quite a while, and was having no luck. I finally found one of your websites and joined WA, then proceeded along the path of article marketing that you recommended.

Not only have I accomplished my goal of first page Google ranking for the services my company offers, I have started a second business as an Affiliate Marketer. For a ridiculously small investment it is possible to build real assets that generate cash on a consistent basis. That’s way better than buying stocks and praying they go up.

I now write the first article using Dragon Naturally Speaking so I can just talk, create the spinning version with Dragon as well, then use the article spinning and distribution services that you recommend. I was creating the three different versions for UAW by hand…but will use your method going forward since it just makes sense.

Yes it takes time to write and spin every article myself, but the quality is far better than anything I have seen from PLR. I use the content receiving aspect of the services as well. It is very useful since I have quickly learned to discriminate between good writing and not, have gotten excellent tips on link placement, and have found some nice niches that I would not have known about otherwise. Of course it gives my sites fresh content as well.

There is a little bit of trial an error that I have gone through in the affiliate marketing realm (one big lesson I have learned is don’t buy too many domain names too fast….), but it is actually enjoyable to learn something new and see the results of the work pay off.

Thanks for being so prolific, detailed, and outgoing about the way that you are successful as an Internet and Affiliate Marketing practitioner. I am happy for your success and wish you lots more.

Rolf

Kimberly July 18, 2010 at 2:42 am

Potpiegirl,
I have to agree that the UAW service does provide great articles to the sites. I own an article directory that gets articles from them and know that they are very high quality.

I just hope that it starts working out for me as well as it does for you!

Then I could finally afford the services that you talk about here!

Thanks for the great read.

I thought you were also using some kind of multi-user blogs that you set up the get backlinks also??? If this is correct, would like to know more about doing this…

Richard M July 18, 2010 at 4:05 am

Hello Potpiegirl,

Thanks once again for the information. I have been following your blog for about a year now and I finally decided to start owning some virtual real estate. My question to you is regarding the word press theme that you use for some of your niche sites. Do you have a particular one that you would recommend using? I have heard about flexsuqeeze but I would like to pick yourt brain for your thoughts on this matter. Thanks,

Raymond Selda July 18, 2010 at 4:15 am

Thanks so much Jen for sharing your article marketing strategy. I feel that my knowledge always improves and my online business gets better everytime I read what you have to say.

I have my own strategy that works for me and I use different linkbuilding services. And that’s the wonderful thing about this business… sooner or later you’re going to find out what’s going to work for you. If SEOLV works out for you then it works for you… it’s that simple.

Most of the time people who say that SEOLV or any linkbuilding service doesn’t work is those who don’t know how to do keyword research. And some will only try it for one month and leave if they don’t get their pages ranking.

Anyway I’m getting carried away. Thanks again Jen!

kevin July 18, 2010 at 4:17 am

HI Jennifer,

thanks for the answer ;) .

So do you really use Instant Article Factory?
The site appears brand new. Do you use any other article creation software or just good old fashioned brainstorming/forums, etc.

One concern with IAF is that I did a quick search and found quite a few articles already indexed with tell-tale IAF footprints.

just wanted to drop a note and say how happy i was to see you post this. this is exactly how i have started to do my link building – although, I’m using unique article wizard and i split between Ezines and Articlebase. Articlebase will approve your articles faster and often ranks better.

PotPieGirl July 18, 2010 at 4:52 am

Thanks all!

@ DanceDance – I’d like to think that Google would be more concerned with the auto-blogs and scrapers than with those looking to syndicate quality content out onto the web…but, ya never know ..

@Rach – yes, the monthly fee is a bit tough for some – I know it was for me at one time, too. Thing is, I do a LOT of article marketing. Believe it or not, these services actually save me money (AND time)

@ Pavol – loved the conversation – thank YOU!

@ Rolf – Wow, thank you for sharing your story with me/us. You seem to be doing very well – congrats!

I, also, love trying new things and then seeing the results. One of my favorite things about what I do!

I need to try Dragon Naturally Speaking. I’ve hesitated because usually this house is too active for me to record – but I think I’ll give it a try. It sounds like it is a big time-saver.

@Kimberly – Yes, UAW sends out some good stuff.

@ Holly – yes I have other sites. It’s a pretty advanced topic so I don’t think I’ll get into it here. I talk about it a bit in my niche site guide and show people how to do a mini-network using free sites.

@ Richard – I’ve started making my own themes for my WordPress sites. I got tired of spending so much time tweaking other themes and found it easier to just make a theme that worked for me.

@ Raymond – You’re absolutely right.. we all need to find what works for us. This works for me and for my needs so I decided to share it.

@ Kevin – yes, i really use IAF and I really like it. I let my article writer try it and it made her so nervous… she was afraid I wouldn’t need HER anymore…lol!

Thanks for reading and for your feedback everyone!

Thank you for your great article PotPieGirl. It’s a good overview of automated tools that you could use.

But I don’t use any automatic tools myself, because they leave footprints. The more people start using a particular tool, the more this footprint is going to stand out.

Also I wonder how good it is to pump out all these “3 ways to solve problem xyz” articles. In the looooong run I mean, if everybody starts doing it.

My gutfeeling says, to stay away from these templates from now on.

Grace (Quit Smoking During Pregnancy) Addison July 18, 2010 at 11:38 am

Sounds like pretty much what I do Jen. But I use Free Traffic System instead of your second service. So it is a little more cost effective: one paid service (SEOLinkVine) one free service (Free Traffic System). I use The Best Spinner for spinning. Thanks for sharing your system!

Neil Little July 18, 2010 at 11:45 am

Hi Jennifer.
Good post.
As a Blog owner who is reliant on articles from other people to furnish my Blog I can honestly say that without this it would have taken me far longer to achieve my pageranking.
I use the plugin from UAW (which is free) and vett all articles before they are posted.
I also do the same myself so it’s a win, win situation.
Traffic is good, sales fluctuate, although my site is predominately for Adsense.
With Seo Linkvine I dismissed this, I receive loads of emails a day and that one got binned….lol, will be looking into that seeing as you have said they are a good service to use.
Cheers
Neil

Hi Jennifer,

Thanks for another great article. I like the way you take the time to layout info in a way beginners can understand. I have a couple of questions for you. Here you recommend Instant Article Factory. How does that compare to another Jon Leger product, the Best Spinner? Do they do the same things? Is one better than the other and why? If you only have the budget for one, which would you choose? How about the Rapid Writer that is available in WA? (which I can’t quite figure out how to use, nor have I found a good tutorial on WA for it) Thanks for your help!

cat July 18, 2010 at 1:50 pm

Nice strategy Jennifer. If you could only use one of these link building services, which would it be? I’d like to try one at some point, but probably won’t be able to get them all at once.

I tried IAF for a few days, but didn’t really get along with it. For some reason having to write within the confines of a template made me slower than I would have been just writing an article from scratch. It’s a nice idea though.

I hope you’ll write about some of your more advanced methods (like the blog network) some time – I’m sure that lots of us who read your site aren’t beginners anymore & would appreciate the info about taking thigs to the next level (but only if you’re comfortable writing about it of course!)

Hi Jennifer,

Thank you for sharing your strategy with us, I did not think to have multiple article submission services working for me. I see that this strategy can really generate backlinks for you.

I have Best Spinner and Magic Article Rewriter. These two are able to generate the unique article versions. Ijust need to get a hold of SEOLINKVNE. Bring you up to speed when I put this into action.

Clive Anderson July 18, 2010 at 3:52 pm

Hi Jen,

As you so rightly say, there are many ways to skin a cat, but obviously you are doing something that works and appears to be working very well.

Maybe back in the day It should have been me learning from you in the CYN Forum.

I read a lot of what you write and it certainly makes sense to me, but perhaps you should step back a bit to where you started out and think from day one as to what it is that first started to elevate you from student to teacher…

I’m sure that a majority of your readers would gain more from your initial findings of how you found out what and how to do rather than the latest gadget that forms only part of your current activities.

Thought I was doing the same as you were and yet the funny thing is that even though I feel I am I’m certainly not anywhere near the level you have recently flown too even with the 14 – 16 hour days.

Anyway just my 2 cents for ya Jen, and you know I am really pleased that you are continually rising, it must be a real buzz!

Warm regards,

Clive Anderson :-)

PotPieGirl July 18, 2010 at 4:34 pm

Thanks, Clive! And always nice to “see” you!

This post originated because I have a big thread going in the WA forum and was asked by a few how I do my article marketing for backlinks – specific…products I use and all. So I promised them I would spend a few hours and put it all together here on my blog so everyone can benefit.

I do a lot of beginner/intermediate tutorial posts because I totally remember what it was like trying to figure some of this out. From time to time, tho, I like to give people more insight into how I do things now from a bit more advanced perspective.

I realize that many of the tools, services, and memberships I use now are currently out of budget for those that are new. But, to me, that just means they can’t afford them YET =)

Hopefully, hearing a few advanced tactics from me might help others see thing in a new light – not so they buy what I use, but so they learn different ways and can perhaps adapt their own current strategy in a way that is more effective.

Anyway, I’m rambling…again…lol

THANK YOU for stopping by, reading, and for your comments!

Jennifer

It is the best learning site and forum out there. If you don’t belong join, many tools that work. Thanks a lot for doing this post so quickly! When you asked us to be patient, I didn’t know you meant 30 minutes later was ‘patient’ to you. I just knew it would take days for this post lol Thanks again. And this is off topic, but I know you do local business online marketing as well. I know I and a lot of others would love to get more info on this. A lot of training programs for this training costs hundreds and thousands of dollars. So if you have time, maybe create the blueprint on how YOU do it. Even if you choose to sell it, I don’t mind purchasing it from you. Thanks again

Andy, SEO Company, SEO Services July 19, 2010 at 6:16 am

thanks for the great information jen, i was excited and quickly gobbled all the info.

i guess to use these techniques, we do need to set aside some ~$150/mth, since it’s leveraging 2 monthly subscription services. so, it may not be suitable for newbies perhaps..

also, i read a review by Dr Andy Williams, and he didn’t speak as highly on the SEO linkVue as many of the sites doesn’t seem to be indexed by G in the 1st place.

am thinking perhaps UAW together with some free web2.0 syndication may suffice? i guess it depends on how competitive the KW is.

Peter July 19, 2010 at 10:35 am

Another day, another question came to me overnight.
You are allowed only 1 account pp on ezinearticles. How do you go about different author names for the different niches? I mean 5 or more niches, there are only that many variations on the original name possible.

All American Canner July 19, 2010 at 12:55 pm

I like the concept. I write, spin and submit my own articles but there is no way I can afford one of these services a month let alone two.

I do appreciate you sharing what you do though. Thanks. But for many of us it is simply unrealistic. I know it takes money to make money and I am not opposed to that at all but some of these monthly fees are just crazy!

Hi Jennifer,
I’ve been working and working on learning everything I can to become a successful article marketer and have several articles published on ezine with good clickthroughs and know that rank and traffic are key so I need to move onto those techniques.

I have read your post and have the following question:
If I don’t have a site (domain link in article forwards to affiliate page), do I link my spun articles to my ezine article or to my domain name (that doesn’t seem to make sense to me)?

Thanks for the tips and advice.

Nigel July 19, 2010 at 4:42 pm

Hi Potpie Girl,

I don’t want to sound clever or pour cold water on this, the opposite as I’m always looking to simplify things.

However, I have 5 sites, one 3 months old, 2 two months old and three 3-6 weeks old. They have fairly competitive keywords and are all at the no1 spot on Google for their term.

The three older sites have a maximum of 17 articles linking to them at Ezines, and 2 UAW articles each.

The problem is, whilst I like the idea of UAW, I have 2 sites, 2 months old, that I have used UAW for backlinks ONLY. They are nowhere. My latest site is 9 days old, and NO 3 on page 1 of google, with 7 ezine articles, and NO UAW!

Secondly, the article submission service to which you refer says that it takes just one article. hy does this not fall foul of the duplicate content problem?

My point is, I am not at all sure that these services are worthwhile, a solid link from Ezines seems to outperform everything!

Please persuade me otherwise!!! Am I missing something here>?

Your comments would be much appreciated, and please, i am NOT trying to shoot you down – I have benefited from a lot of your posts and I am certain that you are “one of the good guys”!

Regards

Nigel

Nigel July 19, 2010 at 4:43 pm

Sorry – it’s six sites with the site that uses UAW only!

PotPieGirl July 19, 2010 at 7:54 pm

Hiya Nigel =)

Great questions! Let’s see if I can answer them for you.

Please keep in mind that these are my answers… I don’t work for Google or anything like. Just a marketer like you ;)

I like to not only get my sites/pages ranking NOW, but I like the work I do to last a long time. That’s why I like services that slowly drip feed my unique articles out over time. I think it’s important for Google to KEEP finding new links and mentions of your content on the web. That’s why I like to do it this way – plus it gets a lot more out of that one EzineArticle.

If you found a way that works for you, GREAT! Your sites are very young so just keep an eye on your rankings as time goes by to see if you need to do anything. Don’t forget that your competition just might be building back links on a constant basis.

This is simply how *I* do it. I like to get as much as I can out of my article – both now and in the future… and I like it set to work FOR me.

Thanks for reading and for your comments!

TP July 19, 2010 at 8:34 pm

Hi, Jennifer

Thanks a lot for laying it out step by step. I have subscribed to both of those services & find it also the fastest way to get a lot of good content published, and to receive good stuff (although I find the UAW quality higher overall).

One question: if your goal is to get that ezine article ranked ( if I understood correctly) then are you linking to that article from the submissions on the other two services? Say, using one link to boost the ranking of the ezine article, and the other links to link to your website?

Just wanted to clarify. If you don’t backlink to the ezine article itself, how does this strategy help to get that article ranked?

Thanks again for sharing your hard-earned knowledge!

Cody July 19, 2010 at 10:48 pm

Cool way to automate things with a pretty low investment. My day job is in a B2B setting and my bonus is figured based on website conversions statistics. Would you recommend this for a B2B setting?

I realize the main goal is backlink building, but I just want to be sure there is nothing fishy going on with this software that is going to de-list my company’s website before trying this out.

Ria Wallace July 19, 2010 at 10:51 pm

Great information. I have to ask however, how well does anyone here research the tech support for some of these products?
Regarding the article writting program that you use specifically? Should a customer be concerned after purchasing that the email registered and the password sent does not work? Should they be concerned that the help desk although states will respond to technical questions Monday thru Friday, they’re only response was they received the ticket?
I am just wondering.

Teresa July 20, 2010 at 1:36 pm

HI, Jennifer

Left a comment yesterday, but I guess I did something wrong ’cause it didn’t “stick”!

So, thanks very much for the lesson. I use both services you mention (I find article quality for content-getting is better on UAW).

Question: you said you want your original ezine article to rank, that’s the purpose of the other steps, right? So, are you using some of the links from your other article submissions to backlink to the ezine article? And the others to link to your website? Otherwise, how would this strategy get the ezine article ranked?

Just wanted to clarify before I get started on employing this system.

Thanks again for sharing your hard-earned knowledge with the rest of us. I hope to be able to do the same as I learn more.

Hi
Just quickly great stuff, Thanks.

With the Seolink, you say first submit the original to ezinearticle and then can you get that exact article in its original form and copy and paste it into seolink, without spinning it first?
Does not the original one you put into seolink get submitted out there, do they spin it before it goes out? As I would be afraid of having duplicate stuff going out?

Thanks
Rosetta

Michael July 20, 2010 at 8:14 pm

The proof is in the pudding.

I have used the potpie method for over a year and made a grand total of $300 in that time period. Yes it sucks. I have put an immense amount of time and work into it for very little return.

I grew frustrated (obviously) and often wondered what separated my lack of success from her apparent success. Now I know.

I have followed several of her online campaigns (with out her knowledge) and been blown away by her ability to relatively quickly build 750 backlinks from 65 unique domains. This would take me months to do myself!

I have often asked myself “how does she do it?” It is obviously some kind of software or service because there is no bleeping way she can do this manually. Her sites rank fast and well. So my million dollar question was “what freaking software does she use?”

Now I know. Know I know I need to pony up an outrageous $200 a month. That is not going to happen while I am making $300 a year. If she was only making $300 a year she wouldn’t do it either!!!

If you can afford it I am sure it works because I know it works. If you can not afford it yet (like me) then read all the other posts here for alternative ideas.

Sheryl-GET A WEBPAGE! or me and everyone else is going to kick the heck out of your ranking articles.
I and everyone else will Squidoo you to death.

Having an ezine article rank well is neat and all but it will get absolutely wasted by a squidoo or hubpage that has a few good backlinks from article directories like ezine.

Hi Jennifer

First off, thank you so much for providing your blueprint on getting backlinks using article marketing.

Josh Spaulding has a similar approach when it comes to using articles for links versus using them for direct traffic but your written approach has enlightened me on the little things that can speed up the process like your tip in Step 4.

I’ve used the services you recommended but never thought of using the spins from the first service to use in the second service…duh! That tip alone will save me a ton in money and time so thank you so much :)

I’ll be reading your posts a lot more now that I see that your tips improve the leverage in my business!

Dear Jennifer,
I can see at the bottom of your post that you track all copies made. I saw that after I highlighted and copied your post on 5 steps to article marketing. My stupid printer leaves web pages (ie content) blank and only prints the navigation bars so I just pasted your post into a word document so I could print it. I will NOT and have NO intention of using it for other than reading it!!!

Please forgive me copying it.

Jennifer your instructions are top-notch, as usual. I have always had great results following you and article marketing is no exception. Now I know how to really take it over the top. I had gained a lot of success with ezine alone but it’s just not enough volume-wise.

PotPieGirl July 22, 2010 at 1:21 pm

Thanks all! Let’s answer some questions…

@TP – You asked:

“One question: if your goal is to get that ezine article ranked ( if I understood correctly) then are you linking to that article from the submissions on the other two services? Say, using one link to boost the ranking of the ezine article, and the other links to link to your website?

Just wanted to clarify. If you don’t backlink to the ezine article itself, how does this strategy help to get that article ranked?”

Ezine articles tend to rank well on their own, but yes, you certainly can use the other steps in this process to throw a few links at your Ezine article to help rank better.

@ Cody – You asked:

“My day job is in a B2B setting and my bonus is figured based on website conversions statistics. Would you recommend this for a B2B setting?”

If ranking better in the search engines can help with your conversions, then yes, this can help. If you aren’t comfortable doing it straight to your site – keep the “build links to your links” theory in mind.

@ Ria – I’ve never had any issue with support for any of the services listed. Yes, you first get an automated response ticket letting you know your ticket was received, but then someone gets back to me.

@ Theresa – this isn’t a process to stress over. Ezine articles tend to rank well on their own, but if you’d like to use a link available in the other steps to help your EA article, then certainly do that. There are plenty of opportunities to have a few of the available links drip to your EZ Article.

@ Rosetta – You asked:

“With the Seolink, you say first submit the original to ezinearticle and then can you get that exact article in its original form and copy and paste it into seolink, without spinning it first?
Does not the original one you put into seolink get submitted out there, do they spin it before it goes out? As I would be afraid of having duplicate stuff going out?”

SLV has a built in spinner tool. Paste your EZ article in there and then use the spinning tool to spin it before submitting it to the SLV system.

@ Michael - You’re absolutely right. It took a long time and a LOT of hands on manual hard work to get to “here”. But when money starts coming in, you use it to build/scale your business so you get more bang for your time and work. Just how I do things =)

@ Mark - You’re very welcome. I’m so glad it helped!

@ Sheryl - No worries! I do that to keep tabs on where my work ends up on the internet. For some reason, people feel quite comfortable copy/pasting my stuff as using it as their own….sigh.

@ Lethbridge – Thank you! This is a way to get more out of what you are already doing – without spending much more time to DO it… AND it keeps working FOR you (my favorite two points of this strategy…lol!)

Lovin’ the comments everyone… THANK YOU!

Jennifer

Gregory Burrus July 22, 2010 at 11:36 pm

I love the post and the strategy, pretty detailed but it is right on. Funny how the simple things always keep working regardless of all the latest complex strategies.

I also find it strange how much people here worry about Google versus worrying about the fact they need a long term and solid business strategy to survive on the web.

We would not run a real world bricks and mortar business with smoke and mirrors so why try online. It will never last.

Why not find a good strategy and as listed above just run with it and than Google worries go bye bye.

Love your strategy, I will be using it.

PS: You mention you have lots of sites all over, just wondering how many is many? – is this part of the strategy to success. Get tons of sites out there?

Thanks for your time.

Question… PPG, if you could invest in one of these services which would you go for? Linkvine or uaw? I have another one of brad callens products (keyword elite) and it’s pretty good, but there are a lot of comments here for uaw too.
Thanks for your strategy! It’s great to see a step by step list, even though I know all the steps, I get caught up in information overload.

Thanks for these amazing tips. I usually use power article rewriter to rewrite the articles I post in my blog and submit them to ezinearticles. I think I like your strategy better

Brad July 26, 2010 at 1:55 pm

Thanks for the great info. Most of this makes perfect sense, however I do have 1 question. Assuming that we are really starting with only one article and we are submitting it to Ezine Articles to start; what are we using for content for the site that we are promoting in that original article posted on Ezine? That website should already be setup and have content on it correct?

Web Writer July 27, 2010 at 5:05 am

I suggest hiring a Web writer if you really want good results. I’ve heard that article-writing software can save time, but the results aren’t always great. Most people can tell the difference between professionally-written marketing articles and automated content. If you’re serious about your business, it’s important to be serious about your marketing.

Briluki @ Best Marketing Courses July 27, 2010 at 11:27 am

At last, someone actually explains Article Marketing, it’s uses and potential. I have been doing it the wrong / hard way but now I have that “Aha” moment … makes sense at last. I don’t think I can afford the SEOLV at the moment though I do have Instant Article Factory and the new Llama Spin (works for me). Now that I can see a ‘system’, maybe I’ll have a bit more luck and traffic to stop Clickbank taking money away as things haven’t been good of late. (not too happy loosing the hard earned $’s just ’cause I haven’t sold anything quick enough for them … they still have my earnings in their bank!!)
Sorry about that little rant … now to try your ‘system and see if it works for me. Thank you for the great information and I’ll keep coming back for more.

Tim@Make Money Online Today July 27, 2010 at 2:41 pm

Thanks Jen for sharing…I’ve been doing much of what you recommend, but didn’t think of using SEOLV and UAW together.

For me, I enjoy doing the research then have a professional write the article. Costs less than $6 and saves me hours of work. My fav is needanarticle.com.

When my article is done I post the article on my WP blog and let my ezinearticles plugin do the rest. Once the article is up, I give it to UAW. Works like a charm!

Although outside the scope of this post, if you add the additional step of posting your article as a video on several video sites, you can get your article on Google page 1 within minutes for fairly competitive keywords.

GFX Video Writer and Tubemogul make this so easy!

Gary July 27, 2010 at 9:56 pm

You said:
The reality is, ANYTIME you create a link to your own content for the purpose of improving your ranking, you are going against Google’s wishes. Based on that, paid sites, free sites, forum links, profile links, blog commenting, and ALL that stuff isn’t really kosher – but it’s a necessary evil to survive online.

I say that Google goes out looking for this stuff. They have to want it.

Hi Jennifer,
Just stopping by to say hi! Your site is really looking sharp, and I am especially enjoying your clean crisp graphics. The one golden nugget I’m taking back here is the push for eZine articles. Sad to say I’ve only submitted one article, and it was rejected. (They did refer me to their press release site, which I tried…) I hope they’ve improved their interface, it was clunky when I tried it a year or so back, but I’ll try it again.
Best of luck!

Find articles August 4, 2010 at 3:29 pm

That’s very interesting. I have always thought that article submission service is a nuisance, since it basically submits to blogs that nobody cares about. But you seem to think otherwise.

Robert August 6, 2010 at 4:56 pm

Thanks Jennifer. I had not thought about spinning my own articles for exponential syndication (and links). Great idea.

Also, completely agree about EzineArticles. Within just a few days I had 4 pages of Google search results listing sites that picked up my article.

ZACKICK August 8, 2010 at 12:02 pm

Hi there Jennifer

i am a big fan of your and i just read thru your post about the article marketing. It was really add value information that i can’t find anywhere else.

From my understanding:
i must write article then submit it to ezine, after that wait for ezine to publish it.

Then take the article that have been publish spin it 3 times to chunk out more uniqueness article.

The one that most unique then do mass spin to create 70 article.

submit it to all 70 article directory and there usually will allow 2 link– which is one is for the ezine link, and one more link back to my website. IS THIS THE RIGHT WAY?

It will be great to have you comment back about my understand on your method.

Thank
zackick

Philsout@Philippines Outsourcing August 12, 2010 at 9:04 am

Hi Jennifer,

You are a genius at explaining things. I have one question regarding submitting article EzineArticle. Is it alright if I submit spun articles to other directories while waiting for the original article be approved on ezine?

Tag Heuer Men's Aquaracer Watch August 16, 2010 at 11:13 pm

I know what you say works, because you have integrity. But Geez, that’s a lot of money to put out when I haven’t made a cent yet on my squidoo lenses. I was scammed big time when I first started out in internet marketing, so I am really gun shy when it comes to getting out the credit card, especially for a monthly service like UAW.
