It is VERY common today for entire sites to built with the content found within RSS feeds from sites all over the net. In fact, there are tons of ‘automatic’ website builders that allow you to choose a keyword or two, press a button, and PRESTO – a complete website built on RSS feeds. While that may all be well and good (or not), there is another side to that story. What about the blogger who just had their post scraped to build that site?
I do a good bit to keep an eye on this blog. Like many of y’all, I work hard on my content and posts. There is nothing recycled here – it is all the unique musing and insights from inside THIS odd little brain =)
When I used to find sites that completely copied/scraped a post of mine, it used to drive me insane. There is always a chance that another site can rank higher with my content than I do…and get me dumped down to the ‘we have omitted results’ filter area on a Google search.
If you’re a WordPress blogger, what can you do about it tho?
Making Scrapers Your Friends
I found a wonderful little plug in that has helped make RSS scrapers into my content syndication team. It’s very simple to install and use, and it doesn’t interfere with the readers experience at all.
Yesterday, I found this post of mine on the internet. Now, I am not posting a direct link to it, but you can find it here:
pkpk8.net/article/auto/2623.html
Take a good look… it is a complete RSS scrape of my original review post for SquidooCashMachine.com. Yes, they kept the links and didn’t strip the HTML, but the links are the same color as the text…
You’d think that made me mad, right? Wrong! I love when these little sites grab my stuff now.
Scroll on down to the end…
See this part?

There is a link back to my blog AND to the original post. That is done with this simple little WP plug in. By using this, I am claiming ‘ownership’ of my content and the original location where it belongs. IF/when Google reads that scraped post, they will see it.
RSS Footer WordPress Plug-In
The free little plug in is called RSS Footer and can be found here. Simply download, extract and then upload to your plug ins folder. Go into your admin area and activate it. Then simply set the two fields to do what you want them to do.
This footer only shows on full RSS feeds of your posts, but not on the posts themselves. It is a great little plug in that gives you just that little piece of mind of one less thing to worry about.

That is a great plugin. I have been looking for a way to always get a link. How does this work for scrapers that take the html out of the article?
Hi Jennifer,
That’s a great catch.
I don’t think I would have thought about the issue, let alone finding a plug in to fix it.
Thanks to you, I just added the CommentLuv, DoFollow, and RSS Footer plug ins to my new blog.
Thanks for all you do.

John Dilbecks last blog post..What is your top affiliate program?
What a great plugin. I usually just put a link back to my site in the post somewhere. I also have a google alert for my name going, so when I see a post that got scraped I go and make a comment. 🙂
Will download this immediately~ Looks great, thanks for the heads up.

For those people using Blogger (which I do for my main blog), you can do this a little bit by setting up a post footer. Go to Settings-Site Feed and include a post footer that has a link back to your blog.

Okay, maybe I’m a dummy (or not just awake yet), but where do you change the options on this plugin. I have activated it, but I cannot find it this morning.

Andrew,
If you’re using WordPress version 2.6, click on Settings and then RSS Footer.
I don’t know about previous versions of WordPress.
Hope that helps.

I wanted to let you know about some new Digg insider info.
My Digg contacts tell me that they automatically bury any Digg posts that link to Squidoo and HubPage articles.
So do not submit your Squidoo or HubPage articles on Digg any more, they will just get buried.
Also, Stumble is hating on Squidoo too, Stumble a Squidoo page and since there are so many spamming Stumble with them you profile may get removed for Stumbling them.
Also my eBook is totally updated and now 100 pages, email me if you want the updated content and I have have an affiliate program you maybe interested in.

Hi Jennifer
Came across your blog while researching about Squidoo – thanks for a very useful blog!
I’ve been using RSS Footer for a while, and it definitely helps. Another tip I’ve found useful is, whenever you can, include a link to another page of your site within the first paragraph of each blog post. That way, if the scrapers only show the first hundred words, you still get a link (as long as they’re not filtering out the links)
Cheers, Jon

Hey All! I hope everything is going well…Please take a second to read this. As I hope you all know that Jennifer is about to launch her new clickbank product, I can’t give her enough kudos for creating this…seriously!
Maybe because her methods and secrets that she told me helped me make my first 3 sales, EVER!, in less than a week of sending her a PM. I have proof here in my blog:

You’d be out of your mind not to buy it! It doesn’t matter if you are a newbie like I was 2 weeks ago, or are a seasoned marketer…you WILL see results!

Jennifer,
This came in at the perfect time thanks to Jackie Lee of Internet Marketing for Mommies! She sent me your post when I told her this morning someone stole my content with scrapper software and stripped my link!
I appreciate you! Looking forward to getting to know you as well. Cool stuff!

I’m actually researching different blog options for my website. I never knew that a scraping issue existed. I’m glad that you told everyone about this plugin and plan to utilize it as soon as I install a blog on my site. I have bookmarked this page. This blog thing seems so vast, I can’t wait to sink my teeth into it…And look forward to reading more of your knowledge on the subject.
Thanks.. Interesting – and always important to be aware!
hey id like to talk with you about your blog. please email me – thanks.
It sounds like you’re creating problems yourself by trying to solve this issue instead of looking at why their is a problem in the first place
I started with a lengthy comment but deleted it because I got off topic. Some of my older posts are by other authors with permission but bad Word press conflicts show both the author and me as authors and settings refuse to save changes. As you stated, even those old blogs were scraped and posted elsewhere in full ,without due credit.Hopefully that plug-in will help. When I solve the last remaining technical problems with my blog I will delete those old posts from the data base and republish them with the corrections regarding the actual authors.
Thank you! I know this is an old post, but I never noticed this plugin before – this is a great idea and I am going to add it to my “main set” 🙂 !
Stumbled upon your blog and read a few of your postings.. Nice blog. Keep up the good work. Looking forward to reading more from you in the future.:D
